Just like last week, here is the essay.
The writer J.R.R. Tolkien said, "I believe that legends and myth are largely made of truth." Write an essay explaining whether you agree or disagree with this quote. Use details from both passages to support your ideas.
Hints:
Include an intro, body paragraph(s) and a conclusion
Tell if you agree or disagree with the quote and support your ideas
Include at least 2 details from EACH passage
Check and double-check for spelling, grammar and punctuation
EXTRA HELP:
Organization: If you agree with the quote, try to focus on the similarities between the myths and truth. For example, their length, weight, and their large eyes If you disagree, try to focus on the differences between the myths and truths- like the aggressiveness of the creatures in the myth and the reclusive nature in reality.
Suggestion- You can do:
• Intro
• Myths
• Truths (and explain/connect how myths are based on truth)
• Conclusion
or
• Intro
• Myth/truth (size, enormous eyes,) the same
• Myth/truth(
• Conclusion

Sea Monsters
As long as there was language, sea myths were voiced. But is there foundation to these tall tales? J.R.R. Tolkien continued this thought by stating “I believe that legends and myths are largely made of truth.” Personally, I largely support his proclamation because the reality concerning giant squids aren’t far-fetched from the folklore. In sailor’s tales, the giant monsters were alleged to include an unbelievable eye size however; the facts command that squid’s eyes are the size of basketballs!
In fantasies about unbelievable sizes, giant monsters are incorporated in many mythology stories but comparable qualities feed factual information like being the size of up to 60 ft. If you read the story “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea” you’ll find that the “devilfish” as Jules Vernes called them, contain many qualities that the giant squid does. One of those qualities is doubtlessly the 8 arms Jules so fearfully described appear in the facts about giant squids.
As horrendous monsters emerge from folklore, their features significantly resemble that of a giant squid’s appearance. Gigantic eyes (the size of a basketball) are an aspect that fantasies and reality of giant squids both occupy. As Jules Vernes says “It was a squid of colossal dimensions.” In life today, giant squids have, as a fisherman in 1873 found, tentacles that stretch 19 ft. long. In an enthralling mythology, the author describes the weight of the submerged fiend as 20,000 kilograms or 2 tons and the giant squid specimen weighs 1 ton.
Myths comparable to the undersea lurking fantasy being most definitely originated from the truth are, in my opinion, the reality for all legends. For instance, the giant squid contain the weight of 1 ton and in fairytales, the “bloodthirsty monsters in the sea” include a similar weight of 2 tons. Just visualize what innocent, extraordinary, animals have been mistaken for ferocious creatures that feed folktales today.
There are many strange things under the sea. Many strange myths are about the kraken, or giant squid. You’ve heard the stories, “Captain! A giant squid thing is attacking our ship! It ate half our crew, even Jim!” They are true, partially. There is really a giant squid, but it is very calm. It won't attack.
A popular one is the kraken. They kraken is partially real. All its features are real, like the eyes, but, the tentacles do not regrow. I know, sad. It is also not as aggressive. It will not attack your ship, but it may grab on.
The kraken and the giant squid are similar. The giant squid may have been mistaken for a kraken. They have the same length, same features, same huge eyes, and all that stuff. The kraken is a myth based on the giant squid.
There are many myths and truths. Kraken is myth, giant squid is the truth. Myths and truth often get mixed up with each other. People think they saw something amazing, but it was really just a giant squid. But that is amazing to see.
You might think “Oh, those Giant Squids are just a fairy tale. They are the same things as mermaids, fairies, and other things like that.” Well however I believe in the giant squids.
Long ago sailors and fisher men were telling stories about a giant squid that would come out and that would try to kill all of the sailors and fishermen. You would think “liars” but of you actually think about it, all the people that were sailing on the same boat and then they come home and tell these stories about the giant squids. Do you really think that all of those people just wanted to scare their people and friends? You might say “maybe not all of them” but my point is that all of the sailors were telling the stories about the squids they would not just try to scare people would they?
Then after a while scientists started looking for a squid but they couldn’t find one then one scientist found 16 or 17 baby squids he caught them and wanted to raise them but when they got to the shore all of them were dead. Once the Japanese were sailing and they found something under the sea that was straggling to get out. Then they saw a giant squid then it pushed too hard and one of his legs ripped. The Japanese got I think 500 photos of the giant squid.
Even though it didn’t attack anyone or anything like that but still it was HUGE. Its eyes were the size of a basket ball and it weight I think about 200 pounds. So maybe they found one off the species off those giant squids. They didn’t find the exact one maybe they all died the squids that the sailors were talking about but still how can you say that they didn’t exist you just can’t.
So they actually did find the giant squid’s maybe not the ones that the sailors were talking about but they still found one. I believe that they did exist or maybe they still do.
I definitely agree with J.R.R Tolkien’s quote. I agree with the quote because the myths and legends are similar to the truth. Some similarities are the weight of the animal. Even if what the passages say is a myth it could be similar to the truth, this is why I agree with this quote.
*****
Can squids grow back their tentacles when it has been cut off? In the novel “after the tentacles are sawed off they grow right back.” How big are the squid’s eyes? We may never know, it seems to be that they are as big as a basketball. All of these myths are very close to the truth; this is why I agree with J.R.R’s quote.
****
Is the truth and myths all similar or different? It turns out that the squid’s eyes aren’t as big as a basketball. Those two are very similar because none could really tell the difference of the size in the eyes. Could squid’s tentacles really grow back? “Once severed, a tentacle can’t grow back.” All of these myths and legends are very similar to the truth and I also believe that myths are made of truth.
*****
In conclusion I do agree with J.R.R Tolkien. Out of all of these passages the myths and the truth is all very similar. That’s why I agree with this quote.
<3 Dolphin <3 said,
Everybody has heard of mermaids, the lochness monster and all those mysterious monsters, but have you heard of a hydra or the kraken? This is my first time hearing about it. Some people say that they aren’t true and others say they are so real. The question is, real or fake?
The myths of these mythological creatures are just legends, or are they? French yachtsman Olivier de Kersauson, was on his boat riding very fast when suddenly his ship came to a halting stop. One of the ship members looked through the port hole to see it. There it was a huge tentacle snaking around the ship! Are we sure that happened, no. This creature looked like it came out of a horror movie! It was 30 ft. long and had big slimy tentacles. It had such big tentacles that were so sticky that it left imprints on the side of the boat. “I’ve been sailing for 40 years and I have always had an answer for everything-hurricanes, icebergs,” de Kersauson says, “but I didn’t have an answer for this. It was terrifying.”
Some people think that a hydra and the kraken are just giant squids, or similar. I think they are similar. They both do have abnormally large eyes the size of basketballs. I know this because marine biologist Steven O’Shea has been looking for the giant squid since 1996 when he was showed a corpse of one. Although for years the biologist didn’t have a huge breakthrough he finally had one. Japanese scientist found a school of whales and thought they would lead right to the squid. They were correct. When they set up the sea camera they saw the giant squid trapped under a huge rock. That was O’Shea’s biggest breakthrough.
The hydra and the kraken are still on the verge of being true, but not 100% true. It is similar to the giant squid. People believe that the old stories of ships and things like that seeing these things are just old people telling the truth, but very over exaterated. Others will disagree and say that it is true. If people believe that then what’s next, mermaids becoming as true as humans?
Fairies and wizards. Witches and mermaids. All of them aren’t real. Or are they? Sea monsters might not be real, but there are a lot of things sea animals have in common with these made up creatures… “Made-up.”
In the world of mythical creatures, there are two most feared deep sea creatures. The Kraken and the Hydra. The Hydra has come from Greek mythology. And is described with “The worst breath ever.” It is also known to have many heads. Supposedly if you chop one of two grow back! This creature is very feared. The Kraken is feared, too. Information about the kraken COMEs from Norse mythology and sailors reports of seeing it. The Kraken is “larger than whales and stronger than an elephant.” It’s known to trap a ship in a whirlpool and then eat all of the passengers!! Seems UN real right?
Everything un-real has to have some truth in it, right? The kraken is like a giant squid, which has been sighted! WE got this information from researchers who have spent a lot of time trying to find this evidence. It had 18 feet long tentacles, huge eyes (the size of basketballs) 8 arms, and was “the size of a school bus.” When they captured it, the squid tried to squirm away. The crew was amazed!!! The Hydra is similar t=to the description of an animal in “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.” Who has 8 tentacles and enormous eyes. It supposedly eats sailors, like the mythical Hydra!!! This information is from sailor sightings. Who were very scared.
I believe that a lot of myths are based off of real things, just like J.R.R. Tolkien. Maybe fairies and wizards have connections to real creatures, too!
Many people claim to know plenty of facts about land myths and monsters, So I’m going to tell you what I know and have learned about sea monsters. I learned about a myth that actually exists, they are about creatures that may be real.
There are three giant sea myths. The first myth I’m going to tell you about is The Kraken monster. This story comes from Norse mythology. Sailors claimed this myth wasn’t just a myth, but a true story and believed it was real for centuries. Stories have claimed the monster attacked ships at sea and ate all the passengers on the ships, including the Captain! The second myth is called The Hydra. The Hydra comes from Greek mythology. The monster had three heads and if you cut off one of its head it would multiply by two. The Hydra was also known for its horrible breath, in fact it was certain that if you catch a sniff of its breath, you would wish you were stuck in a sewer. The third monster is the most recognized of the other two. That monster is The Giant squid, this myth has been argued time and time again. There have been proof that this monster does exist and there have been people claiming they have seen it.
The Giant squid is of course a giant as for his name. The monster can way up to thousand pounds and can grow to sixty feet long. The first real proof of this monster existing was photographs taken in 2004. The monsters live thousands of feet deeper than any human can go. They have enormous eyes, in fact larger than any animals we know. They also have highly developed nerves, the can react in an instant. They can scurry away from any net or picture taken of them.
A man named J.R.R once said “I believe legends and myths are largely made of truth”. It is up to you to believe what he said is true or not, but you will never really know if they are out there hiding. Myths are not always what we are made to believe, so that means that we will never know what is real and what is not.
This paper is going to tie together two mythical figures to reality. When people think about tall tales do you think the tall tale based on reality? I think that the legends of the kraken and the hydra are based on reality.
There are two kinds of myths the kraken and hydra. The kraken looks just like a giant squid big eyes, 8 tentacles, and have suckers on the end of the tentacles. The kraken is told that it attacked the ship but the hydra gets attacked.
I think that the reason why both sailors had the same description because there is no kraken or hydra it’s a giant squid. The giant squid attacked the ship because the squid was really hungry and what is better than 30 humans for lunch. The reason why the kraken and the hydra was born because the sailors were looking at the water all the time so they made up the kraken and hydra as a story to tell.
After the sailors are attacked how come they all describe the kraken and the hydra with big eyes and long tentacles?
You probably have heard a lot about “sea monsters” such as the Kraken, Hydra, and other unknown monsters from stories. But how much of these myths are based of truth? I think a lot of them are because otherwise no one would have a clue about what to make up.
In myths there are all sorts of things that you questioned they were made up. With the Kraken they can be very long like 30 feet or more and have big eyes. You may have heard that the Hydra has really bad breath. In the book 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea the creatures have huge eyes, large tentacles, and way a lot! This creature may be described as a Hydra or Kraken but has facts to make it seem normal like a giant squid. The creature attacked the boat and killed men and still you would think that the facts are mostly wrong, right?
From marine biologist facts and work we know that there are such things as a Giant Squid. Many of the facts about this creature seem similar to the ones in myths. The giant squid has eyes about the size of basketballs. It’s about the size of a school bus too. The weight seems accurate of around 1,000 pounds to the unknown sea monsters. These are just some of the physical factors similar to the Kraken, Hydra, and monster from 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea.
Monsters of myths may seem like made up trash but facts show that most myths are based off real specifics. Maybe the Kraken and Hydra are just Giant Squids with a couple of twists. As the author J.R.R said “I believe that myths are largely made of truth.” Do you agree?
As we know now,the giant squid is not a monster. But back long ago it was portrayed like monsters are now. It was like a myth like mermaids.
What we know now as the "giant squid" was what past people knew as a monster. It was a giant horrifying monster of the sea. This "monster" was 30 feet long and had toothy like suckers which left large impressions on sailors boats. It had huge eyes. It was a monster out of a horror film.
Now we realize that it does have huge eyes, is wide and has tentacles. Scientists came to the explanation that sailors were seeing a type of giant squid. So that "monster" in horror films was no "monster" and causes no harm.
So in conclusion the giant squid does have huge eyes. And can be seen like a monster. But if that was considered a myth, what about mermaids.
Some people say there are myths about the kraken and the Hydra and other frightening animals in the water. Some say there are truths about the kraken and the Hydra but nobody knows if they are myths or truths.
The myths about the Kraken are that some sailors say they tell stories about the kraken. They say they are huge as a whale and stronger then a elephant. In 1873 a fisherman of the coast of Newfoundland returned to shore with a 19-foot tentacle. Scientists realized that the kraken or something like the kraken was out there. Now the myths of the Hydra some say that if you cut one head of the Hydra two more heads will grow
Now the truths about the kraken and the Hydra is that the sailors tell stories but what if they just trying to trick you in believing in the creatures in the water. Another truth is that how can a fisherman can capture a 19-foot tentacle if nobody else can capture one or has seen one. And the last truth is that scientists say it was a kraken but what if it was a octopus.
In conclusion nobody knows if the Hydra or the Kraken exists. It is an opinion for others to believe it the Kraken or the Hydra.
I believe that mythical creatures are not real_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
